What are Dental Crowns ?

These crowns are made up of metal alloys. These can be cast metal, gold alloy, cobalt-chromium, stainless steel, etc. Needless to say, they are metallic in appearance and are not aesthetic. Hence they are not recommended for anterior aesthetic regions.

They are most commonly given when the tooth structure is severely damaged, and sufficient space is not available for other types of aesthetic crowns. Many patients prefer gold crowns too. They have the highest strength and durability. They can last for more than 20 to 30 years if taken good care of.

Metal Ceramic Crown:

These crowns have a metal base on which ceramic is layered to give them a tooth-like appearance. These crowns are not only aesthetic but also durable, due to their metal base. But when given in the anterior region, the dark hue of the underlying metal may be visible. There may also be chances of the ceramic layer chipping off exposing the dark metal underneath due to long-term wear. They are mostly preferred in the posterior regions but are also given in anterior areas.

Zirconia Dental Crowns:

These crowns are made of oxides of zirconium, which makes the crown look completely natural, mimicking the aesthetics of natural teeth. This material has flexural strength as high as metal-ceramic restorations but has an excellent aesthetic and natural look due to its translucency. Being metal-free, it has no chance of gingival darkening and exposure of metal margins when gums recede. These are also the most robust material available for people with bruxism or grinding habits as they do not wear off. Thorough color penetration till the restorations ensures higher shade consistency and limits any shade variation after occlusal adjustment.

E.max Dental Crowns:

E.max crowns are the next generation ceramic crowns made of advanced pressed ceramic formulated from lithium disilicate crystals. It has greater strength and natural-looking aesthetics. It is metal-free and biocompatible, eliminating dark margins. It has high strength, Enhanced translucency, and resistance to fractures. It is indicated mainly for crowns in anterior teeth due to its superior aesthetics. Posterior single crowns can also be done.  When versatility, dependability, and durability come to mind, e.max crowns are unmatched in clinical success. 

Gold Dental Crowns:

Full cast gold metal crowns are known to be the most wear-friendly materials available. They remain in the mouth as it is without any wear or tear for years. They are known to last up to 30 to 40 years with acceptable oral hygiene practices. They have excellent biocompatibility. Fewer microbes can adhere to the crown due to the highly polished surface and thin margins. So they have high plaque resistance. Though they are known for longevity and durability, they are not aesthetic and are preferred in posterior regions. It is also essential to avoid these in patients with specific metal or alloy allergies.
